Gregory J. Fermann, MD

University of Cincinnati Medical Center

Dr. Fermann is Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where he serves as the Executive Vice Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Fermann joined the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, the first emergency medicine residency program in the United States, where he remains today. Dr. Fermann served as the Medical Director for the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) Emergency Department and as the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He remains active in the clinical practice of emergency medicine at West Chester Hospital and UCMC. He is the Founder and Director of the Clinical Trials Center (CTC) in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Fermann’s academic interests are acute cardiovascular diagnostics and therapeutics. He is a member of the Emergency Medicine Cardiac Research and Education Group (EMCREG) and Emergency Medicine Research and Outcomes Consortium (EMROC). He has received extramural funding from the NHLBI, PCORI, and other foundation and industry sources. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters in the field of risk stratification in acute heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and thromboembolism.

Dr. Fermann is on the national steering committee of several multicenter trials such as QUANTUM-AF (improving the under treatment of patients with AF), SOAR registry (evaluating the impact of DOAC related hemorrhage), and GUIDED HF (PCORI-sponsored trial intensified treatment and follow-up in patients discharged from the ED with AHF). He is also the Chief Investigator of the multicenter clinical trial MAGNET ACS-US. He is a reviewer for several leading journals, including Annals of Emergency Medicine, Journal of Cardiac Failure, and JACC Heart Failure.

Dr. Fermann received his BS in Chemistry from Saint Louis University and MD from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his residency training in emergency medicine at the Maricopa Integrated Program in Emergency Medicine.
